Construction begins on Spaced Out show garden

Construction of the pioneering Spaced Out show garden – Spaced Out: a garden of observation and discovery – has now begun at Tatton Park in Cheshire ahead of the RHS Flower Show that begins on July 18th.

The Spaced Out team are delighted to announce major sponsorship of the garden by Edexcel, the UK’s largest examination awarding body and part of Pearson plc, the world’s largest education services company.

The team, plus a number of guest astronomers and space scientists, will be delighted to meet members of the public at the show.

You can’t miss the garden…look for Sputnik!

Countdown continues for launch of Spaced Out show garden

The official ‘launch’ of Spaced Out UK’s show garden - Spaced Out: a garden of observation and discovery – at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park in July is rapidly approaching. The Spaced Out team are now able to give details of the opening celebrations and the garden’s supporters.

The garden and ‘50 years of Space Exploration’ exhibition will be opened on Press Day, Tuesday 21st July by astronomer and presenter of BBC TV’s Sky at Night, Dr. Chris Lintott, and solar physicist and TV presenter Dr. Lucie Green. Other distinguished astronomers and space scientists will be in attendance.

Spaced Out UK is extremely grateful to its supporters of the garden and exhibition: The Royal Astronomical Society, BBC Sky at Night magazine, International Heliophysical Year, The Open University, Tobermore Concrete Products Ltd. and All Turf Limited.

The team hope that the tremendous publicity generated by the show and in the media will not only raise the profile of the project generally, but also attract further sponsors to help us to complete the remaining nine sites.

The garden will be on sale at the Flower Show (July 18th – 22nd). The RHS Ticket Hotline is 0870 842 2234.

Spaced Out UK to create major Show Garden at Tatton Park
The celebrations start here…

A design for a pioneering and dynamic show garden to be exhibited at the renowned Flower Show at Tatton Park in July (2007) has this week been accepted by the Royal Horticultural Society.

The garden, Spaced Out – A Garden of Observation and Discovery, has been designed to the highest standard by two innovators in their field, Ann Picot and Pasquale Pascucci, both of whom have won prestigious RHS medals in recent years.

The garden is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the dawn of the Space Age (the Soviet satellite Sputnik was launched into Earth-orbit in 1957) and aims to develop many of the project’s original ambitions:

•     to engage, inform and inspire the public in space awareness and promote astronomy education in the UK;
•     to raise awareness of the Spaced Out project, and
•     to launch two exciting educational developments – Spaced Out LIVE and Spaced Out - Outer Spaces.

The planting style is creative and represents elements of the Earth and its atmosphere, from and through which we observe space beyond. The imaginative use of representative installations such as Sputnik, radio masts and the Earth’s atmosphere, interact with light levels and planting, and encourage observation, discovery and spatial awareness.

In order to maximise its educational value, and to achieve an element of sustainability, the garden has been designed to be re-located after the flower show as an outdoor learning zone to promote further observation and discovery.

With such a topical theme and strong storyline, the Spaced Out team are confident that the garden will capture the public’s imagination and attract huge media interest.

The RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park is open to the general public from Thursday 19th July until Sunday 22nd July. The RHS official ticket hotline is 0870 842 2234.

Members of the Spaced Out team, astronomers and space scientists look forward to meeting you at the show and helping us to celebrate 50 years of Spaced Exploration. The visually stunning Spaced Out show garden will be easy to find!

Spaced Out is Designated a Site of Special Astronomical Interest
The Spaced Out project has been officially designated a Site of Special Astronomical Interest by BBC Sky at Night magazine.

The article, written by Sky at Night co-presenter Chris Lintott, is featured in the August 2006 issue. A map shows the locations and images of the installations at the nine sites that are currently open to the public.

Project Director Nigel Marshall was very pleased with the content and layout of the article, and said: “The team are delighted to be officially recognised by Sky at Night magazine and are proud to be associated with what has become the UK’s leading publication dedicated to Astronomy.”

Spaced Out website re-populated after 'Big Crunch'!

The Spaced Out team are happy to announce that the project's website is rapidly being re-populated with Resources, Links, Images, FAQs and lots of information about the individual sites and the artistic installations representing the Sun, planets and other members of the Solar System following the recent 'Big Crunch'.

We anticipate that the site will be fully-populated by the end of June.

In the meantime, you can take the Solar System Tour, explore the Sun and planets, and make virtual visits to all the sites where the installations are located.

New educational resources to support the teaching of Science at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4 (including 'How Science Works' resources) and Astronomy at GCSE level have recently been added.

Please re-visit us soon to keep up with the latest developments.
