Above Swanshurst School in Birmingham already hosts its own scale model of the Solar System.

Work on the design and development of the site that will eventually host the installation of the centaur Pholus is currently in progress.

Please re-visit the Spaced Out website to keep informed of progress.

Meanwhile, you can discover lots about Pholus by scrolling down to the Whacky Facts and clicking on the links below.

Above

ImageWacky facts!

  1. Pholus was discovered on 9 January 1992 by David Lincoln Rabinowitz at the Spacewatch Project in Arizona.

  2. It was the second asteroid in the Centaur group to be discovered and the reddest (due to hydrocarbons called tholins) so far.

  3. If Pholus were to be given a nudge by Jupiter or Saturn’s gravity, it could approach the Sun and become a very impressive comet.

  4. Its orbit takes Pholus from the orbit of Saturn to that of Neptune but it is probably unstable.
