Halley's Comet was the first comet to have its return predicted by Edmond Halley in 1705 using mathematics derived by Isaac Newton at Halley’s request.
Although Halley died in 1742, the comet did return in December 1758 ( 618 days late ).
Halley’s Comet was also seen at the time of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and is depicted in the Bayeaux Tapestry - ithe comet became associated with the death of Kings.
Comets have been described as 'dirty snowballs'; this is due to their composition of frozen gases and dust.
Dust from Halley's Comet gives rise to the eta Aquarid (in May) and Orionid (in October) meteor showers.
On 29 July 2061, Halley's Comet will approach within 0.48 AU of Earth, and after a close encounter with Jupiter, its orbital period around the Sun will change from from 76.01 to 74.71 years.
